President’s Message – June 2013

Hi, all, Bill Hocking here.

I am honored to serve as president of the Mass Council for Social Studies.

One of my first projects is to spread the good news about what we do to all corners of the state. I will start this process by reaching out to the department chairs, curriculum specialists, and lead teachers in districts and secondary schools throughout Massachusetts. Since the recent demise of the Teaching American History program there is a large professional development void that can be effectively filled through MCSS and local affiliated organizations that provide quality programs for social studies teachers.

We are in the midst of planning next year’s Northeast Regional Conference on Social Studies (April 7-9, 2014) and welcome your suggestions for breakout sessions that will attract you and your colleagues to our workshops and programs. We want to continue to be your voice at the local, state and national level on issues impacting the teaching of history and social science.
