This session describes a unit that teaches elementary students the history of the abolitionist movement, the power of public speaking, and the importance of civic action. It demonstrates how to employ nonfiction picture books, teach persuasive writing and speaking techniques exemplified by Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth, lead a field trip to Boston’s Black History Trail, and facilitate an inspiring reenactment of an abolitionist rally at Boston’s African Meeting House.
