We model lessons from our kindergarten through middle school literacy-based civics curriculum, in which we use high-quality literature, historical events, and the students’ own experiences to teach civic values, skills, and dispositions. Through audience participation, we show how students who use our engaging, interactive curriculum develop a sense of personal responsibility for others, learn they can make a difference in their communities, know how to work for justice, and value their participation in civic life.
