Teaching About Reconstruction: The Fragility of Democracy

In the wake of the Civil War, ordinary people facing very difficult odds tried to create a better society, a functioning democracy, and equality in this country. Participants will engage with classroom educators who are currently using “Facing History and Ourselves” unique methodology and “The Reconstruction Era and the Fragility of Democracy” and leave with a collection of rich primary sources as well as writing prompts and new interactive teaching strategies to add to their repertoire. Participants also gain insight into rationales and best practices for engaging students in conversations about race, justice and other potentially challenging topics. Resource booklet included.
