Voices from the Past: Introducing Historical Letters to Elementary Students

Tuesday, 8:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m., Learning Center Classroom, Kennedy Library
Presenters: Esther Kohn and Sam Rubin, John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum

Participants learn how historical letters, paired with excellent biographies for children, can help students make personal connections to American history. Drawing on the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library’s unique collections, and other sources, participants will read primary documents, learn more about the historical context in which they were written, and consider what “messages” they bring us from the past. Participants will come away a selection of primary sources and related teaching ideas, sample lesson plans and a bibliography.
