MASSACHUSETTS HISTORY DAY 2008

               CONFLICT AND COMPROMISE IN HISTORY

Do you wish there was a way to give students a “hands on” experience in History and the Social Sciences? History Day is an excellent way to do that. It is a contest for students in two divisions, grades 6-8 and 9-12, that encourages young people to produce papers, projects, performances, and media presentations based on their own original research. There are three levels of competition: District, State and National. History Day provides a wide forum for students’ work and opportunities to interact with other junior historians.

WHAT CAN HISTORY DAY DO FOR YOU AND YOUR STUDENTS?

It can:
* Get students to look at history in other than textbook terms.
* Reinforce classroom projects, topics, and discussions.
* Encourage projects that are often natural channels for students’ enthusiasm.
* Get students out of the classroom to do research on a topic of interest.
* Encourage parents to become involved.
* Promote better communications among teachers at all levels.
* Promote closer and more harmonious relations between teachers and students.
* Allow professionals to learn what is going on in other communities in the state.
* Provide support for teachers who wish to utilize community resources.
* Encourage teachers to see history within the totality of the humanities and social science disciplines.

This is the year to have your students participate in Massachusetts History Day. The program fits within the Massachusetts History and Social Science Framework.
* It encourages the students to do primary source research.
* The topic is a good interdisciplinary topic.
* Many topics from the history of Massachusetts will fit this year’s theme.
