Middleboro Historical Society & Massachusetts Archaeological Society Co-Sponsor A Lecture by Dr. Len Travers

Captain Hodges’ Last Stand: Recovering A Story of War, Captivity, & Redemption

Please join us on April 24th at 2 pm at the Robbins Museum.

In 1756, at the height of the French and Indian War, nearly 50 amateur soldiers, many from southeastern Massachusetts, faced an ambush on the shores of Lake George that nearly wiped out their entire unit. Len Travers, Associate Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, will discuss the aftermath of this encounter, as well as the experiences of those soldiers who were captured and taken to Canada.

His lecture is based on newly recovered documentary evidence.

The author of several books, Dr. Travers most recently co-edited The Correspondence of John Cotton, Jr., 1640-1600. He resides in Middleborough and previously worked at the Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston.

This collaborative program, which is free to the public, is co-sponsored by the Middleborough Historical Association and the Robbins Museum through a grant to the Historical Society from the Middleborough Cultural Council. Light refreshments will be served, and guests are invited to tour the Robbins Museum, which houses a collection of 90,000 artifacts that—in combination with its exhibits and dioramas—reflect the native heritage in our communities over 11,000 years.
