Call for Manuscripts: The Journal of the Middle States Council for the Social Studies

Call for Manuscripts: The Journal of the Middle States Council for the Social Studies, Winter 2010/11, Number 2 Editor: Dr. Catherine Gatewood, Interim Associate Dean, Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania Deadline for Submission: September 15, 2010

As I write my second Call for Manuscripts, I am looking out at the beginnings of a beautiful spring knowing many of you will take time this summer to write and I ask you to consider submitting a manuscript for consideration. The goal has not changed. As always, social studies educators hope to read and learn from each other in regard to best practices in social studies education, citizenship education, research and pedagogy.

It is our desire to include two sections in this upcoming edition. The first section will have a focus on interdisciplinary instruction. If you are collaborating with teachers of English Language Arts or in other subject areas we would like you to share your research and experiences. For example, are you teaching a unit on the Holocaust and working with the English department in regard to Holocaust Literature? What works and what doesn’t? What makes a successful collaborative team? What special challenges does it offer? What benefits?

We wish our second section to be more of an applied section that offers us discussion on successful unusual lessons, different content ideas, or looking at social studies from a different lens. Our feature article for this edition will be from Heidi Hemming and Julie Hemming Savage who have recently published a textbook entitled, Women Making America geared to ninth graders that reveals lives of regular and extraordinary women in the context of US History. In this section we strongly encourage submissions from graduate students studying social studies and curriculum, new teachers, and other classroom teachers taking a different approach that they are seeing reap benefit in their classroom.
