Impact of MCAS Delay on Massachusetts History and Social Studies CurriculumThe Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has voted to postpone the implementation of MCAS testing for social studies. How will that impact the curriculum? Please begin thinking about what history and social studies courses have been reduced or eliminated in your school or district’s curriculum. We would like to collect accurate information from as many schools and districts as possible so we can communicate our concerns with real data to support our position. We have some anecdotal data which indicates that teachers of other disciplines are being asked to teach history/social studies and that elementary teachers will “fit social studies in” while focusing on the subjects of math, language arts and science which are being tested. As soon as the data collection form has been developed, we’ll link to it from here. Initially this posting is a bit of a placeholder so we don’t hold up the publishing of the MCSS Newsletter with an explanatory article by Roger Desrosiers about the goals of collecting the data.
