This award is presented to a K - 12 teacher or a team of teachers who have created an exceptional economics program that:

Develops and/or uses instructional materials creatively and effectively. Incorporates innovative and/or verified effective instructional strategies and techniques. Integrates economics content and concepts with other disciplines. Encourages an inter-disciplinary approach to economics ideas. Fosters a spirit of inquiry and the development of skills related to acquiring, organizing,processing, and using information and making decisions related to both domestic and international matters. Fosters the development of democratic beliefs and values, and the skills needed for citizen participation appropriate to age level classroom, school and community settings. Shows evidence of professional involvement in activities such as workshops, curriculum development, committees, and other association or activities, etc. To be eligible for the award, a teacher (or team of teachers) must be a classroom teacher in grades K - 12, teaching economics at least one-half time in a departmentalized school or regularly and systematically in a K - 12 setting. The nominee need not teach a course called economics. Collaborations with other institutions, programs, and individuals are encouraged. This award celebrates excellence in economics and promotes professional involvement, therefore M.C.S.S. encourages nominations of non-members as well as members. It is expected that nominees will excel in at least five of the six areas listed above. The emphasis of this award is on the learning and teaching that consistently occurs, not on special projects or professional commitments.

Nominations for the award should come from a supervisor, principal, fellow teacher or other individual who can provide credible evidence of the nominee’s achievements. A nominator can be from an un-related system or institution. No self-nominations will be accepted.

It is the nominator’s responsibility to prepare an entry packet that includes the following:

A vita or professional resume prepared by the nominee. A narrative consisting of not more than two -three (2-3) pages typed, double spaced on 8 1/2 x 11 paper describing his/ her achievements. Supporting documents which might include reproductions of newspaper articles, teaching evaluations, and letters of support not to exceed an additional five (5) pages. The name and mailing address of newspapers and cablevision affiliates in your community. Nomination papers that are incomplete or that do not meet the established criteria will not be considered.
