This award is presented to a department head or coordinator who has demonstrated exceptional ability in the social studies in:

Designing professional development programs that encourage the use of innovative and/or verified effective instructional strategies and techniques. Encouraging and providing time for collegial collaboration . Informing his/her staff of new scholarship from history, geography, the social sciences and other appropriate fields. Fostering a spirit of inquiry and the development of skills among his/her staff related to acquiring, organizing, processing, and using information and making decisions related to both domestic and international matters. Demonstrating professional involvement in activities such as workshops, curriculum development. committees. and other association or activities etc. To be eligible for the award, a nominee must be a supervisor or department head supervising at least 50% of the time in social studies. This award celebrates excellence in leadership in the Social Studies and promotes professional involvement, therefore M.C.S.S. encourages nominations of non-members as well as members. It is expected that nominees will excel in at least four of the five areas listed above.

Nominations for the award should come from a superintendent, supervisor, principal, fellow administrator, a teacher or other individual who can provide credible evidence of the nominee’s achievements. No self-nominations will be accepted.

It is the nominator’s responsibility to prepare an entry packet that includes the following:

A vita or professional resume prepared by the nominee. A narrative consisting of not more than two -three (2-3) pages typed, double spaced on 8 1/2 x 11 paper describing his/ her achievements. Supporting documents which might include reproductions of newspaper articles, supervisory and/or teaching evaluations, and letters of support not to exceed an additional five (5) pages. Evidence of interactive and/or mentoring relationships with teachers supervised by the nominee The name and mailing address of newspapers and cablevision affiliates in your community. Nomination papers that are incomplete or that do not meet the established criteria will not be considered.
